Councillor Tony Briffa

- Deputy Mayor, Hobsons Bay City Council -

- Independent Councillor for Altona & Seaholme -

Welcome!
Welcome to my website.  I am the Councillor for Altona Ward in the Hobsons Bay City Council, and the Deputy Mayor of Hobsons Bay. I am not a member of a political party and am proud to continue the Altona tradition of being a truly independent councillor.

I was born and raised in Altona and have always been very active in the local community.  As a councillor, I am currently a member of the following committees:

•	Urban Planning and Development Advisory Group (Chairperson);
•	Disability Advisory Committee (Chairperson);
•	Commercial and Audit Board;
•	Multicultural Advisory Committee;
•	Youth Voice Committee;
•	Landscape Advisory Group;
•	Police Community Consultative Committee;
•	Hobsons Bay Interfaith Network; and
•	Truganina Explosives Reserve Advisory Committee.

I am also a Justice of the Peace and Bail Justice, and was the Co-convenor of the local residents' association (Hobsons Bay Residents Association) for 5 years prior to being elected to the council.  Previous community roles include Foster Carer (1996 to 2010), member of the Western Health Ethics Committee, President of the Seabrook Community Centre, President of the Genetic Support Network of Victoria, and a member of various Victorian Ministerial Advisory Committees.  I am also a Commonwealth Public Servant and a Victoria University Honorary Fellow.

I am very passionate about helping our local community.  As Co-convenor of the Hobsons Bay Residents' Association Inc., I:

•	Opposed inappropriate rate increases in Hobsons Bay (Council has increased rates by 28% in the last four years);
•	Represented residents at VCAT to fight various inappropriate developments (including the Inland Port in Altona, a function centre for 350 people with parking for only 24 cars in Altona Meadows, and a helipad near homes in Altona);
•	Represented residents at Council Special Planning Committee meetings;
•	Successfully campaigned to save parkland from sale;
•	Successfully campaigned to retain parking permits for residents;
•	Campaigned to retain the Altona Civic Reception Centre as a community facility;
•	Successfully campaigned to improve pedestrian safety near Central Square Shopping Centre by the installation of pedestrian crossings;
•	Lodged submissions to council to improve community services - especially for our elderly and disabled residents;
•	Campaigned for more respite care hours for the parents and guardians of children with disabilities, and for a sensory playground for children with sensory and/or developmental disabilities;
•	Campaigned for improvements to local roads and footpaths;
•	Advocated for improvements to shopping strips and support for local traders; and
•	Assisted many residents on an individual basis on council matters.

My qualifications, training and experience has helped develop my skills to be an effective Councillor for the local community.  People I work with know I can lead and influence with honour and integrity and make tough decisions when necessary.  I was honoured to be elected Deputy Mayor of Hobsons Bay in 2009, and enjoy supporting our Mayor for the benefit of our community.
Please visit this site regularly to stay in touch with what I am doing in the council and our local community.  Please send me an email with your full contact details (name, address, phone number and email address) if you would like to be included on my email distribution list and receive updates on what is happening in Altona.
Sincerely,
Tony
